People Are Selling Gold for a Variety of Reasons

December 22, 2008

When Reuters broke a story about gold selling in December 2008, the public’s interest in selling gold for cash rose dramatically in the United States. The Reuters story explained how gold found in jewelry boxes and attics could be sold to help pay bills or buy holiday gifts. The reason for the sale does not matter, as a gold buyer is not in the business of passing judgment. The buyer only cares about the quality and quantity of your gold.

Last week, an article about how more and more people have decided to sell gold for scrap hit the wires, courtesy of Reuters new service. The article noted that people are going through attics and jewelry boxes looking for old gold for a variety of reasons–to help with fixed expenses or to buy gifts for the holidays. And a gold buyer will not judge you: whatever your reason are you can get sell gold to get cash for gold and you do not have to explain why you are doing it.

Part of the reason that more people are willing to part with valuable gold items such as gold watches and gold rings is that people are becoming less sentimental about gold jewelry that once would have been kept in the family. Some of this is due to the economic downturn and some of it is due to changes in our culture. The writer for the article interviewed relationship expert Dr. Joyce Brothers and she said that with the increase in divorce, family lines have been broken and people just are not as attached to their silver heirlooms and gold jewelry as they were in the past.

A precious metal analyst quoted in the article also commented that people sometimes make negative associations with pawn shops. There is something to this. It seems that it is better to sell something outright than it is to hock it at a pawn shop.
