Athletes throughout the state of Alaska are quite disappointed now that the Gold Nugget Triathlon has been cancelled. All forms of the event have been terminated. This includes the all-female triathlon, in which thousands of women of all levels of athletic ability have traditionally participated, as well as the special mother/daughter event. The Gold Nugget Triathlon has long been hailed for its spirit of inclusiveness and the courage of its participants. But, spectators and racers will undoubtedly be unhappy this year.
In what is probably very disappointing news for athletes and spectators alike in Alaska, the Gold Nugget Triathlon has been canceled. The Gold Nugget Triathlon has been hailed over the years for its inclusiveness and spirit of sisterhood. The all-female Gold Nugget Triathlon is something that many women look forward to each year. Thousands of women, some who fit the traditional athletic profile and others who do not quite fit that mold have participated in the event. There was even a special Mother/Daughter division
Now, after 26 years, this yearly spring competition will not be happening in 2009. According to the president of the Gold Nugget Triathlon Board, the Gold Nugget Triathlon that was slated for next year will not take place because the facilities used for other competitions will be closed during renovation.
In other years, the Gold Nugget Triathlon has included a 500-yard swim, a 10-mile bike ride, and a run of 4.1 miles. Sure those events seem as though they would be rather daunting, but Gold Nugget Triathlon participants vary in age and athletic prowess. Instead of being a cutthroat competition, the Gold Nugget Triathlon has been a time or growth and sharing.
Although the female athletes of Alaska will miss out on a time-honored opportunity to go the distance because of the cancellation for the Gold Nugget Triathlon, this does not mean that you cannot use gold to go the distance.
