Gold In Julian California.

June 28, 2009

Julian, California is a city that is located about 45 miles from the beautiful San Diego area. Back in the days of the California gold rush, Julian was a hot spot. The gold rush of Julian, California spawned in the mid 1800′s and even to this present day the old mining company is still in existence. Well, to some extent it is open to the public for tours. If you ever wanted to take a step back in time, visit the old mining company.

Earlier in previous post here on this blog we talked about the Gold Rush attractions of Northern California which was spawned in the late 1849’s, however in this piece I want to highlight another site for a Gold Rush: The Gold Rush of Julian California. Julian, a city located about 45 miles east of the greater locale of San Diego doesn’t just have a historical history; it also served as the place where this writer had his honeymoon. While there on the three day vacation we walked by none other than a Mining Company and yes, that place was still giving tours allowing people to get a chance to mine for themselves. It is that memory that has sparked the interest of this piece. Much of the Gold that was found at that time was later turned around and exchanged as money for gold.

This city whose roots were founded by an Ancient Native American Tribe came became a Safe Haven for freed Slaves of the Mid West was later to become a city of a short lived Gold Rush that began in 1869 (in the Julian area). This Gold Rush was spawned by a freed Slave named A.E. Fred Colman, and quickly became the Southern California spot to find your local gold. As the word spread of Coleman’s find, numerous other gold prospectors flocked to the area setting up tents and makeshift settlements alike.  The area soon resembled a shanty town.  The Coleman Mining District was soon established.  This gold rush soon attracted the attention of the Julian and Bailey brothers, the towns would be founders who arrived at some point after Coleman struck gold.  After this surge many people wanted to exchange for money for gold since is was being discovered so easily at that time some people even wanted to exchange small pieces of scrap gold.

Unfortunately by the time that the Gold was being discovered in San Diego County it was also starting to fade, due to the extreme dangerous of it and quite possibly due to the fading interest up in Northern California. What ever the reasons The City’s brief affair with the California Gold Rush, it has still found it’s way into the Nations History. If you ever find yourself retuning from Julian to your home it may be worth it to start looking into looking into how you can sell your gold for cash as the old miners did. And knowing this is wealth on your part. See you in Julian.
