A lot of times when people here the term, “Punk Rock” and or “Hardcore Punk” some may not have known that many of them have gone on to have great financial standing which some may consider it un-punk to be rich. However then there are some of those bands who made it big and then later fell on hard times; some of them had to sell their gold for cash in those desperate times. It is the intention of the writer here to highlight some of these classic Punk Rock and hardcore bands that were able to find some type of lucrative monetary success, beyond playing the famous CBGB’s on the famous Lower East Side of Manhattan; many consider that place as good as gold.
One famous band that some may not have known that they started off Punk was the famed band Blondie. From their humble beginnings on the lower east side of Manhattan they later found major success with the hit single, Rapture and it was even played on some Rhythm and Blues stations. With their famed success you were even able to catch the singer wearing some precious gold pieces from time to time. Another well known Punk band to gain much success were bands like the Ramones. On the outside it could be said that they keep true to their punk roots by dressing the part. However in present times, their record sales are gold packed and people continue to purchase their records to this day. On a more modern tip, one of the most successful Punk bands that have crossed over to date would probably have to be the band Green Day. Almost everyone knows this name and or has a niece or nephew who likes them. This band got It’s start in the Bay area of California and have been able to go to new heights. However even with all of this knowledge there are some in the Punk Rock community who aren’t ecstatic about some of these bands successes. The writer is indifferent and can see the points of both sides. In reality there is nothing wrong about becoming successful and wanting to take care of your family. What we can say is that the genre of the music has certainly evolved since the early 1970′s. There were other bands like Bad Brains, Crass, Inside Out and others who were able to keep a stable following. Either way some of the bands cash in on gold well!
