More Famous Silverware

January 9, 2010

In the previous post, we looked at two of sports most illustrious silverware, namely, the Stanley Cup and the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Each year, sport teams around the world try extremely hard to win some silverware for their city or country. Today, we look at some more famous silver trophies.

First awarded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1967, the Commissioner’s Trophy is the highest prize in baseball. Made of sterling silver, it’s presented to the winner of MLB’s World Series, a 7-game playoff series between the National League and the American League champions. Standing 24 inches tall with diameter of 11 inches, it weighs about 30 pounds. In design, the Commissioner’s Trophy is quite unique. In the center, there’s a baseball with lines of latitude and longitude. Around the ball, there are 30 gold-plated flags with poles of varying heights, representing every MLB team.

Started in the 1871-72 season, the English FA Cup is known as the oldest domestic soccer competition in the world. Though the teams that won this piece of treasured silverware the most number of times are giants like Manchester United, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspurs, there have been famous instances when the “David” teams defeat the “Goliath” teams, sometimes going on to win the coveted trophy. In 1987-88, underdog Wimbledon beat heavy favorites Liverpool in the final. The FA Cup is a knockout competition with no seeding, meaning that no team will be favored in the draw. While upsets are still common, or even expected in every contest, the days when the smaller teams go all the way to win the FA Cup are less frequent. In the past 20 years, the bigger teams have been victorious in the end.

For the serious sports teams, silverware is the crowning glory of their achievements. For now, you should be glad to know that you can get instant cash for silver when you sell silver. Just contact this silver buyer for more details.
