Georgia Town Works to Expand Gold Museum Open Hours
Last month, we told you about how California is not the only state that can claim a gold rush as part of its history. That west coast state certainly had the most well-known gold rush in the 19th century, but not only was it not the only one, it may not have been the first.
There are two towns in Georgia that are locked in a dispute over who was the first U.S. town to be the site of a gold rush. Dahlonega and Villa Rica both saw gold rushers head their way two decades before anyone thought of looking for gold in California.
Well, in order to hold onto that claim and to improve its gold history credentials, the town on Dahlonega is working to make sure that its gold museum stays open seven days per week. As of now the Dahlonega Gold Museum shutters its doors on Mondays and Tuesdays because it gets less money from the state of Georgia.
Seeing as it is a museum to commemorate the town's history as a gold rush town, museum backers cannot sell gold to raise funds. Town officials say that quite a few visitors have been disappointed when they were turned away and prevented from seeing the gold coins, gold nuggets that the museum displays.
One of the fundraising ideas was a contest to guess how many people would visit another local site of interest. The people of Dahlonega are also working on starting their own chapter of the Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites. This will surely help them to get more funds.
If are looking for more funds to help your personal cause, you can sell gold, unlike the gold museum. We are sure that you are not running a gold museum out of your house, so you will not need to preserve your gold coins or gold jewelry. Sell it to a gold buyer and get cash for gold that you can use however you wish.
