Captain Kidd's Gold, pt. 2
On Monday we discussed how the legend of Captain William Kidd makes him seem larger that life, when in reality he may not have been all that we have been lead to believe.
At one point, Captain Kidd had collected twenty for treasure chests tat contained gold, silver and other valuable items. Now as we all know, pirates tend to bury their treasure so they can come back to get it, since they cannot take all of it with them. But have you ever heard of a pirate getting a receipt? That is supposedly what happened with Captain Kidd--he buried his gold and other treasures in a swamp on John Gardiner's land and Gardiner gave him a receipt.
The first question you might ask is--wasn't Kidd afraid that Gardiner would just dig up the treasure for himself? With his terrorizing reputation, Kidd probably feared little and promised to kill Gardiner if told someone about the treasure.
Kidd was not able to see whether he would have to make good on that threat because he was arrested not long after depositing his gold and other valuables in Gardiner's swamp. Gardiner may have had his own designs on the gold, but he could not keep it for himself because the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony insisted that the treasure be turned over to the government.
Years later, people still are trying to find what they hoped would be some of Kidd's gold that may have remained buried. There are legends that Kidd told others where some of his treasures were and that all of it was not turned over to the colonial government.
You need not dig through swamps to find gold. It is likely that you have gold somewhere visible in your home that you do not really use. Unlike, Captain Kidd, you are free to sell gold to a gold buyer and get cash for gold.
