A Battle for Sunken Gold Treasure
There may soon be a battle over shipwrecked gold. This battle will probably be a legal one and not one fought on the high seas on a battleground, however.
A U.S. company discovered gold worth millions of dollars, but just because you discover a gold treasure doesn't mean you get to keep it when a sunken ship is involved.
Spain has staked its claim on the gold, saying the ship is Spanish ship. The ship, La Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes, is reported to be a Spanish warship that sunk in 1804. And here is where the plot thickens...
The government of Peru has also filed a claim to assert its right to the gold treasure. Peru says that the Spanish ship that sunk all those years ago was carrying gold from Peru. So who should get the gold? Who knows?
The U.S. company that found the sunken gold (estimated value $500 million) will likely argue that since the gold has been unclaimed for so many years, it belongs to the finder. In fact, they said that Peru's claim really raises the stakes. It also presents some interesting historical issues--what really belongs to the colonizer and what really belongs to the countries they colonized?
Luckily, you do not have to worry about any of these things. When you find "lost" or forgotten gold in your house, you can claim it for yourself. Then you can take that gold to a gold buyer and let them give you cash for gold. It may not be $500 million, but the money you get from selling your gold will be all yours.
