What is Sterling Silver?

You’ve heard the term “Sterling Silver”, typically when referring to fine dining flatware, serving pieces or quality jewelry, but what exactly is sterling silver?

Sterling silver is an alloy (a combination of metals) containing 92.5% of pure silver and 7.5% of other metals.  Typically the other metal selected for the alloy is copper.  Fine silver as compared to sterling silver is 99.9% pure silver and considered too soft for large pieces and implements. Sterling silver as it is stronger is the preferred metal for silver jewelry, flatware, and quality silver serving pieces and decorative items.

In recent years, alloys other than copper have appeared being used with silver.  Some of these alloys are being made from zinc, platinum, germanium and include other elements such as silicon or boron. These new alloys have appeared in an effort to find a combination that inhibits tarnish which is the bane of any sterling silver owner. Copper however, continues even to this day, in being the preferred alloy for sterling silver manufacture.

The term sterling silver originated in northern Germany in the 12th century. At this time, the term sterling received its meaning from possibly several sources:  (1) the purity level of 92.5% pure silver, (2) possibly from the term of sterling in regards the common name of coins of the time, or (3) from sterling meaning sturdy, firm, or immovable. Regardless of how the term sterling has come to us through the years, today the term sterling silver simply denotes quality and that a 92.5% purity of silver has been used in a creation of the product.

All sterling silver will tarnish over time when exposed to the air through a simple oxidation process. Sterling silver is still considered the best precious metal for decorative and quality serving products such as coffee sets, decorative bowls, elegant dining flatware, serving pieces, and pitchers.

Big Surge in Gold Prices Spurs Major Business Increase at Cash for Gold USA

Los Angeles, California – Cash for Gold USA has reported a major increase in business this week as a result of the major surge in the spot price for gold, silver and platinum. At 9 AM today, gold was at $996/oz while silver exceeded $16.00/oz and platinum topped $1,267/oz.

According to Norman Schneider, president, “Sellers have really reacted strongly to this unique opportunity to sell their broken and unwanted precious metal jewelry for such high prices. Our customer base has gone up so fast this week that much of the Cash for Gold USA staff has been working overtime just to keep up with the seller demand.”

As the week closed, the spot market price for gold, silver and platinum has surged to near record highs. Schneider added, “Gold has only reached the $1,000 level three times since COMEX began keeping records. And by mid-morning today, the market was just four dollars short of that mark again.”

Cash for Gold USA is one of the nation’s premier buyers and refiners of precious metals. The company pays sellers the highest prices available today and offers a 24-hour turnaround from receipt of a sellers property to payment. Cash for Gold USA was recently named to the prestigious Inc 500 list of the best websites during 2009 by INC Magazine. The company also operates two analogous websites: http://CashforSilverUSA.com and http://CashforDiamondsUSA.com .

Schneider also stated, “We have always believed that the record gold prices throughout 2009 had not yet reached the top as the current recessionary economy is still uncertain and fluctuating. The current surge proves that we were correct in this prediction. Right now, sellers have the best opportunity of the year to date to maximize the fast cash payment they will receive for their unwanted gold, silver and platinum property. We anticipate that our business will continue to rise during the remainder of 2009.”

Postcards from Silver Peak, Nevada

Have you ever been to a ghost town? Don’t be afraid. A ghost town is NOT a town full of ghosts! The term refers to a deserted town that’s uninhabited by people so it follows that the town is a ghost of its former self, serving no purpose at all. If you are in the state of Nevada and you want to see what a ghost town looks like, head towards Silver Peak in the county of Esmeralda.

One of the many mining camps located in Nevada, Silver Peak was founded in 1863. In 1865, it had a 10 stamp mill and two years later, a 20 stamp mill. This implies that things were happening very fast back then. For the following 40 years, Silver Peak was a place of lawlessness. In 1906, a substantial amount of investment was put into the area by the Pittsburgh Silver Peak Gold Mining Company, culminating in a 100 stamp mill and the Silver Peak railroad. Though Silver Peak was among the top mining towns in Nevada at that time, everything went downhill about ten years later. In 1948, Silver Peak suffered a burning. Later, the Foote Mineral Company started to extract lithium at the Clayton Valley but Silver Peak largely remained a ghost town.

Today, only a few buildings remain at Silver Peak. Mostly made of timber, they resemble those buildings you see in western movies. Nobody will be least surprised if the Lone Ranger or Zorro suddenly burst out from one of those buildings. There’s a building with the word “SIGNS” on top and another with a blue ice box or whatever box that appear to be liveable. The rest of the buldings are rather run-down. There are some partly completed buildings as well as some partly destroyed buildings. You will also see two large water tanks though it’s doubtful you will find any water in them. In the quiet and humble cemetery, it can be seen that quite a number of people passed away in Silver Peak. Other interesting images include a slanting chicken pen and a roof on the ground.

In the good times, Silver Peak produced gold and silver. Now, it’s a ghost town. Do you want to sell silver? Get in touch with a reputable silver buyer and receive instant cash for silver today!

What’s a Silver Song Club?

When your hair turns silver and your days pass before your eyes like mist in the mirror, what can you do to slow the boat of time? Some go to the parks for slow meditative walks. Some play bridge until the cows come home. Some watch TV until their necks sour. Yet, some roll back the years to find new pleasures or pursue their forgotten dreams. Some folks in the UK join Silver Song Clubs!

What’s a Silver Song Club? Judging from the name of the organization that runs it (Sing For Your Life Ltd.), it’s rather obvious that Silver Song Club members sing but what’s so special about it? Don’t people sing in schools or churches? Well, the thing about Silver Song Clubs is that they are specially set up for the older folks. During a Silver Song Club session, members meet up at certain locations to sing together and bask in the glory of music. Usually, a session takes about 90 minutes and refreshments are served during the break. Currently, there are more than 2000 older folks singing it up at more than 40 locations across North East England every month. Membership is free.

As people get older, they are prone to suffer from a number of age-related diseases, physically or mentally. Under the guidance of The Sidney De Haan Research Centre for Arts and Health, Silver Song Club sessions are specially planned to help older folks in dealing with some of these problems. Specifically, 11 key aims are integral to the success of Silver Song Clubs. Let’s look at some of these key aims. Two of the key aims are “encourage social interaction” and “provide platforms for reminiscence dialogue.” Older folks may become depressed because they have nobody to talk to. In a Silver Song Club, interaction is encouraged among members so they will feel a sense of belonging. Another key aim is to “invoke memories.” As they will be singing the older songs that they loved, they will remember the times when they were “too young to be in love,” triggering memories which may guard against dementia.

Certainly, the benefits of Silver Song Clubs are many. Perhaps, we may see the formation of Silver Song Clubs in America some day. Meanwhile, you may want to reap the benefits of selling silver to the top silver buyer. Send in your silver and receive instant cash for silver today!
