Fans of horror movies and horror writer Stephen King should be aware of the 1985 werewolf film ”Silver Bullet.” Costing roughly $7 million, “Silver Bullet” was based on a King novella entitled Cycle of the Werewolf. In its time, the werewolf was believably menacing and frightening enough to elicit screams in the theatres though it didn’t scare nearly enough people, making only $5.4 million.
The events in “Silver Bullet” take place in a small town known as Tarker’s Mills in Maine. Initially, most of the people didn’t believe in such mythical creatures as fairies, goblins, or werewolves. When a railroad worker was killed by the werewolf, the authorities would rather believe that a train has run over him, accidentally. It’s only when a woman was murdered in her home that the town began to feel a little uneasy.
The narrator in “Silver Bullet” is Jane Costlaw (Megan Follows) who doesn’t really like her brother Marty (Corey Haim), a paraplegic. Things get much more interesting for the siblings when the father of Marty’s girlfriend gets killed by the werewolf, resulting in the family moving to another place. After a teenager is slaughtered, the people take things into their own hands and start to hunt the werewolf. Obviously, they were unsuccessful because they didn’t know about the “Silver Bullet.”
The great hero is Uncle Red (Gary Busey) who knows exactly how to kill the werewolf. Though he’s an alcoholic, Jane and Marty love him, especially after he builds a special vehicle for Marty, called “Silver Bullet.” Thrilled with his new machine, Marty goes to the lake to play with fireworks when he encounters the werewolf. In a close foreshadow of the final showdown, Marty injures the werewolf in its left eye by firing a rocket in its direction.
Overall, the “Silver Bullet” is good, but not really great. On the other hand, what’s really great is that a good silver buyer is offering top dollar for silver. If you want to sell silver, sell it now!
