Silversmiths

In days of old, people learned trades and passed these trades on to apprentices. There is still some of that going on today, although the apprentice system is not what is once was.  Today we can simply go into a store and purchase objects of silver. It is simple to get silver flatware, sterling silver jewelry, silver cups and silver bowlse shelf. right from a stor. There was a time when you would have to go and ask someone to make such objects and there may have been a wait.

Customers would go to a smithy to have an expert artisan craft the kinds of objects that they could not make themselves at home. There were both goldsmiths and silversmiths, and in some places people who worked with both metals belonged to the same guild. Both silversmiths and goldsmiths would share techniques and training because they did similar work.

There is actually more than one kind of silversmith. Some silversmiths use wax to cast the pieces they make out a silver. Other silversmith specialize in forging and forming, using soldering and riveting techniques to work with silver.

The most common smithy for a town to have was the one where a blacksmith would work. But the image of a blacksmith does not fit when it comes to describing the work of a silversmith or a goldsmith. Blacksmiths work with very hot metal. In contrast to this, silversmiths worked with metal that was at room temperature. Much of a silversmith’s skill lied in knowing which hammers and tools to use to transform a piece of metal into the desired shape.

Also, sometimes those who wanted to work with gold would at first practice with silver since it costs less. In times past, silversmiths spent a lot of time making silver flatware, bowls. candlesticks and items related to setting a table. These days, modern silversmiths spend more time creating silver jewelry.

In times past, as now people would take silver objects to a silversmith and have the silversmith melt it down to make something else. These days you can sell silver to a silver buyer. They will melt it down, but you do not have to  have it made into something else. Rather than get something else made out of silver, you can get cash for silver. Sure, as metals go silver is pretty malleable and flexible, but you may not have thought of ways that you could get instant cash for silver.
