How do I know if I have a real diamond?
First off, you need to know that what you have is actually a diamond—there are a few materials often sold falsely such as cubic zirconium and colored glass. Diamonds are rare because they are formed out of carbon at high-pressure high-temperature conditions existing at depths of 140 to 190 kilometers (87 to 120 mi) in the Earth’s mantle the growth occurs over periods from 1 billion to 3.3 billion years.  Cubic zirconium, which is the cubic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) can be made in a lab. While like a diamond, cubic zirconium the synthesized material is hard, optically flawless and usually colorless, it is widely available and thus not valuable. The way to know that you have an actual diamond is by either taking it to a GIA certified jeweler you trust or there are a few ways to tell at home.

  • Scratch Test: Can it scratch glass?
  • Fog Test: It should disperse heat immediately.
  • The Transparency Test: When looking at newsprint with the tip facing down can you read the text?  It should be blurry since real diamonds have imperfections.

How much is my diamond worth?
Once you are positive you have a diamond, how do you know how much it is worth?  One misconception is that your diamond will have the exact same value as what you paid for it at a retail store. You must take into account that a piece of jewelry is marked up due to marketing and overhead. Here at Cash for Gold USA we pay for the actual diamond and not the markup.  The easiest way to know the price of your diamond is to give it to a Certified GIA appraiser, such as the ones we have on staff. They will look at your diamond using the famous four “C”s that define the price of  your diamond:

  • Cut: round, princess, emerald, asscher, oval, marquise, radiant, heart, pear, and cushion
  • Clarity: what are the flaws and imperfections of the diamond
  • Color: colorless, yellow, brown, blue, red and green tinges or aspects to the diamond
  • Carat: most simply, the size of the diamond

How do I send you my diamonds safely?

Taking all of these criteria into account, Cash For Gold USA will use our Certified GIA appraisers to give you the best cash offer for your diamond.
