Finding a treasure full of gold is quite newsworthy, no matter how large it is, but this list of the top 10 biggest gold treasure discoveries will completely blow you away. There have been a number of magnificent gold treasure findings throughout the years, and here are 10 of the most astounding ever:

 

  1. Tutankhamen’s Treasure in Egypt. This is easily one of the most well-known and biggest gold treasure discoveries. In the tomb of Tutankhamen, which was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922, the king’s coffin that was made of solid gold was discovered.
  2. The Pietroasele Treasure in Romania. This treasure features late 4th century gothic gold, including 22 gold objects. It was found in Pietroasele, Bazau, Romania, in 1837.
  3. The Panagyuriste Treasure in Bulgaria. This Bulgarian treasure was discovered by Michail, Petko, and Pavel Deikovi, 3 brothers, on December 8, 1949. They found it while working at a tile factory near Panagyurishthe. It contained an amphora, a phial, and 7 rhytons of pure gold that weighed 6,164 kg.

  4. Pereschchepina Treasure in Bulgaria. This treasure, which was discovered in the Mala Pereschchepina village in 1912 by a boy shepherd contained 16 gold vessels, an iron word with a ring and gold facing on its scabbard and hilt, a staff with gold facing, and gold jewelry.
  5. The Sroda Treasure in Poland. The Sroda treasure was found during renovation works in Sroda Slaska, Poland in 1985. It includes a golden crown that likely belonged to one of Emperor Charles’ IV wives, Blanche of Valois. It also includes 39 gold coins, 2 12th century gold pendants, and a medieval gold clasp with precious stones.
  6. Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple Treasure in India. This treasure includes a gold sheaf that weighs 500 kilos, a 36-kilo golden veil, gold nuggets, crowns, and granules, and an 18 foot long gold chain that weighs 10.5 kilos.
  7. The Treasure of Gourdon in France. This treasure, which was found in 1845, included a hoard of gold from the end of the 5th or beginning of the 6th centuries, including a hundred gold coins from the reigns of the Byzantine emperors Leo I (457-474) to Justin I (518-527).
  8. The Treasure of Nagyszentmiklos in Romania. This treasure found in Nagyszentmiklos, Transylvania, included 23 10th century gold vessels.
  9. Tillia Tepe Treasure in Afghanistan. This treasure was found in the archaeological site of Tillia Tepe in northern Afghanistan. Found in it was approximately 20,000 gold ornaments in addition to several thousands of pieces of gold jewelry that featured lapis lazuli and turquoise.

  10. The Preslav Treasure in Bulgaria. This treasure was found in Castana, Bulgaria, in the fall of 1978. It included numerous gold objects that were later used to produce gold balls and wire, amongst other things.
